The Montello School District invites you to a community meeting to learn more about the upcoming operational referendum on the April 7, 2026 ballot. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and hear how the referendum could impact our schools and the broader community.

Wisconsin school districts continue to face significant funding challenges due to a state funding formula, revenue limits, and unfunded mandates that affect all 421 districts — including Montello. When school funding was originally created, it was tied to inflation to keep pace with rising costs. That connection was removed in 2009, and since then, per-pupil funding has not kept up. If funding had continued to track inflation, the Montello School District would receive approximately $2 million more in 2025 to maintain current programs and services.
The district anticipates significant funding shortfalls over the next few years as rising costs continue to outpace revenue from the State of Wisconsin. When state funding for public education does not keep pace with expenses, school districts must look to their local communities for additional support in order to maintain facilities, current programming models and course offerings.
